The rise of multicloud environments brings new challenges for information security teams, according to the latest Voice of the Enterprise: Information Security, Cloud Security study from 451 Research. The report highlights the key pain points organizations face when securing their cloud infrastructure and the strategies they're employing to overcome these hurdles.
One of the most significant challenges, cited by 21% of respondents, is the difficulty in using the proprietary security stack at each cloud provider. As organizations increasingly adopt multiple cloud providers, security teams must navigate the complexities of managing different security tools and expertise for each platform.
Blumira CEO, Jim Simpson, reflects on the findings: "The 451 Research report underscores the need for a unified approach to cloud security. With the majority of organizations using two or more cloud providers, it's increasingly challenging for security teams to effectively monitor and protect their assets across those disparate environments."
The report also reveals a rise in the average percentage of budgets allocated to securing cloud infrastructure, from 33% in 2022 to 40% in 2023. This increase in spending appears to make a difference, with 51% of respondents now saying that the public cloud can support any project, regardless of security requirements.
To maintain a strong security posture, organizations are leveraging a mix of default security tools from cloud providers (52%), premium security capabilities from hyperscalers (44%), and third-party security tools (42%). However, only 49% of these third-party tools work across multiple clouds, further highlighting the need for more comprehensive solutions.
Simpson adds, "At Blumira, we understand the challenges that come with securing multicloud environments. That's why we designed our platform to provide a centralized console for administration tasks and unified control single pane of glass for monitoring and responding to threats across multiple cloud providers, as well as on-premises infrastructure. As the complexity of these services and systems increases, we must simplify the management of them to optimize the time spent so organizations can strengthen their overall security posture. Our goal is to facilitate outcomes based on a wider set of perspectives, setting aside our ego and actively listening to our customers and colleagues."
Looking ahead, the report indicates that organizations plan to invest in cloud-native application protection platforms (37%) and cloud infrastructure entitlement management (24%) over the next 12 months. As the cloud security landscape continues to evolve, it's clear that organizations will need to adopt a proactive and adaptable approach to keep pace with the changing threat landscape.
