At Blumira, we believe cybersecurity should be accessible to everyone - not just large enterprises with dedicated security teams. Our Director of Incident Detection Engineering, Amanda Berlin, embodies this philosophy through her unexpected journey into cybersecurity and her mission to make security approachable for all.
Originally planning to be a Marine Corps musician, Amanda's path took an unexpected turn that led her into IT and eventually cybersecurity. "I started in help desk support, working various IT roles," Amanda explains. "My interest in security really sparked after seeing Dave Kennedy demonstrate penetration testing. It showed me how security could be both challenging and creative."
Breaking Down Security Barriers
This non-traditional background gives Amanda unique insight into the challenges faced by IT teams transitioning into security roles. She literally wrote the book on it - co-authoring "Defensive Security Handbook: Best Practices for Securing Infrastructure" (O'Reilly Media) to help IT professionals enhance their security practices.
"Many organizations don't have the luxury of dedicated security teams," Amanda notes. "That's why at Blumira, we focus on making enterprise-grade security accessible and manageable for IT generalists. We provide the guidance and automation they need to effectively protect their organizations."
Beyond the Code: Building Community
Amanda's commitment to accessibility extends beyond technical solutions. As the founder of Mental Health Hackers, she works to address mental health challenges within the tech community. This holistic approach to security - considering both technical and human factors - influences how we develop and support our solutions at Blumira.
Security for All
Amanda's journey from help desk to security leader reflects Blumira's core mission: making enterprise-grade security accessible to organizations of all sizes. Her expertise helps shape our platform's automated detections and guided response playbooks, ensuring even small IT teams can effectively protect their organizations.
"Security shouldn't be a luxury reserved for large enterprises," Amanda emphasizes. "Every organization deserves access to robust security tools and expertise. That's what drives our work at Blumira - making advanced security accessible and manageable for all."
